La La Land

Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone star one of the biggest movie sensations of the year: La La Land. This movie has been held in high esteem by many, attracting hoards of fans. It gained over $440 million in the box office.

I personally saw it in the theater, and did find it truly enjoyable. However, it did lead me to question the origins of its popularity. The plot was unimaginative, (struggling actress, how revolutionary) and for a movie centered around jazz music, the score left something to be desired.

All of these factors aside, the movie was very aesthetically pleasing. That's what I found enchanting about it, and I'm sure many others among the masses were fixated on this element.

This used an artistic appeal, to rope people in using the artsy shots and gorgeous costumes. Not only this, but it had a vintage feel, and stylistically resembled movies of the 1950s. The whole motif of jazz plays to this idea. This creates an appeal to tradition as well as an aesthetic sensation.
